Germ Cell Tumors
Germ cells are the cells from which the future ova are developed in a woman. Most of the germ cell tumors are non-cancerous, but some are malignant. There are different types of germ cell tumors and these include teratomas, dysgerminomas, and endodermal sinus tumors. Unlike epithelial ovarian cancer, the germ cell tumors usually occurs in much younger age groups, usually in teenagers and women who are in their early twenties. Historically germ cell tumors had very bad prognosis with only about 10 to 20 percent survival rates one year after diagnosis. The development of chemotherapy has revolutionized the treatment of germ cell tumors and now almost 90 percent of the germ cell ovarian cancers are curable.
