Who wants to be a Kingdom-heir??

Who hasn’t heard of the TV game show Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?  I reckon almost everyone has heard of it.  I know you have watched it, just like I've watched it and everyone else in the world has watched it.

Now why do we watch it?  What makes it such a high rating TV show?  The tension, yeah it could be that.  Maybe it’s the winsome personality of Eddie McGuire, it could be that too.  But I reckon the real reason that we all sit at home watching it, is because of the hope that it gives us.  We sit there thinking:

                        ‘this could be me’…

‘I could be in that chair playing for a million dollars’…

‘Oh gee I wish that was me’.

I suggest we all sit there hoping that one day we can be on that show… we can be playing for one million dollars…  Look at all the things that you could do with that money… pay off your families bills, buy a new house, a new car, a great holiday, 10 new surfboards, invest the rest and life the good life!!!

Lots of people say that at Christmas time what the world needs most of all is hope.  But just what hope are they talking about?  What is this hope?  Is the hope that we need a one in ten million chance of winning lotto?  Is that what the hope is?  Or is it hoping that I pick the trifecta at the races week after week?  I’d like to suggest that the hope we need isn’t found in these things.  These hopes are false – they are dead hopes.  In most cases they are no hope at all.  All it is, is potluck, a stab in the dark.

The hope that Christians have is different.

"Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ!  In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish spoil or fade - kept in heaven fro you" (1Peter1:3-4)

The hope that Christians have is a living hope.  It's a hope that can never perish, spoil or fade.  The hope we as Christians have is a certain hope.  As Christians we can share in an inheritance that is already in heaven for us. This hope is a sure thing, unlike Who Wants to be a Millionaire we can be sure of the hope that we do have.

We can have this hope because of what Jesus has done for us.  Through Jesus dying, the punishment that we deserve for our rebellion against God was paid for.  AND through Jesus' resurrection we have a new life into this hope that Jesus has made possible for us.

As a response (2 Corinthians 5:14-15 tells us) that we should no longer live for our selves but live for him who died for us and was raised again.

This Christmas go out of your way to tell people about the living hope that Christians have.  Share with them the Good News we have in Jesus - tell them that the true and living hope is only to be found in Jesus.
