Britney & Bobby’s Prerogative

Britney Spears, believe it or not, doesn’t write much of her own music!  One of her latest songs (and the name of her current album) was written and previously performed by R&B legend Bobby Brown.  It was on New Year's Day 1989 that Brown released My Prerogative and it spent 24 weeks on the US charts making it all the way to the number one spot.

The first question to ask is… what in the world does prerogative mean???  Basically someone’s prerogative is something that they believe is their right, something that they are entitled to because of who they are or maybe the position that they hold.

The second question is… what do Britney and Bobby claim their prerogative is???  Check out the following lyrics from their song:

I don't need permission

Make my own decisions

What’s their prerogative?  It’s that they don’t need permission to make decisions.  Britney and Bobby are saying that they do what they want, when they want.  This is commonly what our world would call FREEDOM.  People all around us, not just Britney & Bobby, think that it is their right to do what they want to do when they want to do it.  But the truth that Jesus teaches is that all people are actually SLAVES to sin [John 8:34 ] because all people sin [Romans 3:23 ].  Therefore living however you want to live isn’t really freedom!  True freedom is actually living the way that we were created to live.  Jesus says: “the truth will set you free” [John 8:32b niv].  It’s only by understanding God’s truth and living his way that we will live the truly free life.

Don’t look to Bobby, and definitely don’t look to Britney, to see how you are to live.

Look to God…

            He knows what is best…

He’s told us in the Bible…

And He’s shown us by sending his Son to set us free.
